Garnet – January’s birthstone signifies health, prosperity, perseverance and strength. Derived from the Latin word granatum, which means seed, the stone is known for its resemblance to the pomegranate seed and represents trust and eternal friendship, making it the perfect gift for a cherished friend.

Red_Garnet_Banner

Available in three distinct cuts (octagon, square, oval) and in a number of sizes, red garnet is a perfect gift for a friend, and it is also given as a gift on the 2nd and 6th wedding anniversaries.

The History of Garnet

Garnet1

Garnet gemstones date way back to 3100 B.C. The stone is always found in metamorphic rock. Today, garnet is most commonly found in Africa, India, and Sri Lanka. It is also found in other mountainous regions in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Scotland, Switzerland, Tanzania and in Arizona in the United States.

The stone gets its name from a group of minerals that come in a rainbow of colours, including deep red (what it’s most recognized for) to vibrant green colours.

Metaphysical Properties of Garnet Gemstones

Garnet is also believed to have a number of metaphysical properties, adding to the intrigue of the stone. It is often these properties that attract people. Some of the special properties include:

  • Peace and calmness of the mind
  • Enhanced wit and cleverness
  • The feeling of being proud
  • Protection
  • Enhanced honesty and sympathy for others
  • To help people with hardships and remain tough through difficult times

Garnet is also widely considered a stone to help oppose black magic and negative energy, as well as having properties that warn wearers of the stone of impending dangers.

Types of Garnet

Garnet_3

One thing that makes garnet unique from other gemstones is that there are six different types, including:

  • Andradite – this form is in high demand
  • Almandine – this is the most common form and most widely used gemstone
  • Grossularite – colorless when pure, but are also found in blue and red hues
  • Pyrope – these tend to be dark red, are often larger than one carat in size
  • Spessartine – less well known, and rarely used as gemstones
  • Uvarovite – the rarest form

We hope you've enjoyed learning more about the garnet gemstone. Don't forget to {{cta('1270e10c-7e7a-47b4-a6ed-5bdcf52529a8')}}

“Dominic Mancuso is one of the most distinctive voices in music. He is a paramount storyteller; a premier Sicilian griot of these times. He wails with the best. He cries the blues from the depths of his soul — bringing great measures of duende to the music. This is a rare album indeed, quite simply one of a kind.”

February Is Black History Month - Enter to Win Our Book Package

February is Black History Month. Last fall, we participated with our friends Bravo Niagara, in The North Star Festival: Voices of Freedom. And we're so glad we did!

We learned so much about the rich history of the Niagara Region and of The Underground Railroad and the stalwart determination of those oppressed slaves who risked their lives to reach Canada - to reach freedom - following The North Star. We also learned about those who risked their lives to help them along their journey and others who helped them settle into their new lives.

We also learned that we are embarassingly ignorant of the rich black history of Canada. So we've decided to learn more AND to celebrate!

Black History Month: Josiah Henson - Author, Abolitionist, Minister

Josiah Henson was born into slavery in Maryland. He escaped to what was then known as Upper Canada (Ontario) in 1830 and founded the Dawn Settlement (near Dresden, Ontario).

While he did write his own autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, Josiah was also the inspiration for the character of Uncle Tom, in Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (published in 1852).

Uncle_Toms_Cabin_Novel_Cover.jpe

Uncle Tom's Cabin depicted the inhumanity and depravity of slavery and is regarded to be one of the major causes of the U.S. Civil War. Harriet Beecher Stowe was an abolitionist, dedicated to ending slavery. Interestingly, Abraham Lincoln once referred to Harriet as "the little lady who started a war"!

For those of you not familiar with Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, click here for a plot summary.

Born on a farm near Port Tobacco, Josiah experienced many horrific examples of slavery. While a young boy, his father received one hundred lashes (and had his right ear cut off) for simply standing up to a slave owner. Subsequently, his father was separated from the family when sold to a slave owner in Alabama.

Josiah Henson

Josiah made many unsuccessful attempts to secure his freedom and eventually escaped, making his way to Dresden, Ontario, along with his wife - Nancy - and their four children. This risk-fraught escape to Ontario is often referred to as "Following the North Star to Freedom). We are very proud that Ontario became a refuge for those enslaved freedom seekers! Kudos to those who operated the "Underground Railroad" and to those people who helped those who'd reached freedom to establish themselves.

The Underground Railroad, by Charles T. Webber

Upper Canada (Ontario) had become a refuge for slaves from the United States by virtue of John Graves Simcoe, then Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada. Simcoe had passed "an Act to prevent further introduction of Slaves, and to limit the Terms of Contracts for Servitude within this Province". This legislation didn't end slavery. What the act accomplished was to make owning slaves illegal in Upper Canada. This meant that any enslaved people who made their way north to freedom in Canada were free.

Henson established the Dawn Settlement - which was his attempt to realize a vision he'd long held - a self-sufficient community. The Dawn Settlement was successful, exporting black walnut lumber to both the U.S. and Great Britain.

Henson became a Methodist preacher and an outspoken abolitionist. He served as a military officer in the Canadian army.

Josiah Henson passed away at the Dawn Settlement until he died at the age of 93 on May 5, 1883.

Honoured as the first black man to be featured on a Canadian stamp, Henson has also been recognized by the Historic Sites & Monuments Board of Canada (1999) as a National Historic Person.

Welcome - Debbie Noel - Zawadee's Newest Retailer

"I love clothes and I love to shop", says Debbie Noel, Zawadee's newest retailer.

And her namesake store, Debbie Noel Women's Fashions, is a showcase of Debbie's fashion sense! As she says, her love of shopping is a real asset, as she puts a lot of time into sourcing high quality merchandise for her customers.

Debbie's store is located in the heart of downtown Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Originally a small shop with a large selection of merchandise, the store has recently moved to new, expanded premises, allowing Debbie to widen her offering to include décor items, giftware, crafts and collectables. "People who like nice clothes, also like to purchase nice things for their homes and for their friends". We have to agree, Debbie!

Store window text.jpg

Debbie's customer relationships are of paramount importance to her business.

She says wherever she is, when she encounters something "different", she asks herself "is that something appropriate for the shop?" - or "Would that look good on . . .?".

At Zawadee, we admire and seek out retail partnerships who have these "personal instincts" about their customer relationships. It's exactly the way we think!

Black History Month: Viola Desmond - Canada's Rosa Parks?

We thought you might be interested in a book we've recently read and highly recommend.

Cape Breton University history professor Graham Reynolds has written a book - Viola Desmond's Canada: A History of Blacks and Racial Segregation in the Promised Land.

Viola_Desmond.jpg

Source: Wikipedia, Creative Commons, Labeled for Reuse

Long title - fascinating tale! Basically, Viola was a successful business woman in Halifax. While waiting for her car to be fixed one day, she decided to view a movie. She asked to sit downstairs, as she had poor vision and would see the film more easily from the downstairs area of the theatre.

Little did Viola know that the theatre was racially segregated. The theatre employees explained the circumstances to her but the police were called and Viola was forcibly removed and jailed.

When brought before a magistrate, there wasn't any mention of racial segregation at all. Instead, she was charged with and found guilty of defrauding the province of an amusement tax. This tax represented the difference in the theatre ticket price between seating downstairs and seating upstairs! Can you imagine how Viola felt? That's why we think of her as Canada's Rosa Parks!

We learned some astounding things from this book. We were dismayed to discover that in 1930's Canada, the Ku Klux Klan operated freely. We had no idea!

Viola Desmond was charged so wrongly, so cynically in 1946. She wasn't pardoned until after her death - in 1965.

You can order this interesting book from Chapters/Indigo. If you read it, please share your thoughts with us!

Learn more about Viola's story and other interesting Black History Month topics at Historica Canada: Black History Month.

Kenneth Nkosinathi Msomi is the thrower/sculptor of this remarkable piece. Nkosinathi means "God is with us". Kenneth Nkosinathi certainly shows a marked spirituality in the beautiful ceramics he produces in the Ardmore studios and particularly enjoys making trays and platters featuring African wildlife. Kenneth's works have been exhibited internationally and are collected worldwide.

The painter of this extraordinary platter is Mthulisi Ncube. Mthulisi trained at the Mzilikazi Art Centre and worked as an artist, selling his oil on canvas paintings. Mthulisi's work has exhibited at the "Just So Crocodile and Other Curiosity" in Hyde Park (Johannesburg) and at "Safari Week" at the prestigious Patrick Mavros gallery (London).

MADE BY HAND

Often inspired by wildlife, Ardmore Ceramics have been exhibited in leading galleries and collections around the world, including The Museum of Art & Design in New York and The Museum of Cultures in Basel (Switzerland).

Ardmore's modern art style breaks ceramic conventions, using techniques resulting from years of experimentation with materials and processes. The vibrant colours and enormous attention to detail are simply superb.

MANDRILLS
Let's learn about these colourful animals!

Mandrills are the largest of all monkeys. Shy and reclusive, they live only in the rain forests in equatorial Africa. Extremely colourful, they can easily be recognized by their red and blue facial skin and their brightly coloured bottoms! When mandrills get excited, their colours become brighter.

Mandrills eat fruit and roots, insects, reptiles and some amphibians. They can store food in their cheek pouches. Mandrills sleep in trees and live in troops headed by a dominant male. Often hunted as bushmeat, mandrills are sadly threatened at this time. Human contact and a spread of agriculture has shrunk their rain forest environment.

Please remember that Zawadee contributes 2% of the profit of all wildlife related species to charities supportive of endangered or vulnerable animals.
